The primary weapon used by
Knights of Veritas is the longsword, renowned in the
middle ages for
its versatility and deadliness. Tremendous importance was placed on training with this highly regarded weapon,
both for the the discipline required to wield it and for the symbolism it embodied.
Through demonstrations of authentic techniques drawn from period manuscripts, Knights of Veritas reveals what positions were considered the most advantageous, how the sword moves and is handled, and the amazing cutting power of a sword against a cardboard target! The longsword (also known as a "hand-and-a-half" sword) was approximately 48" in overall length with a grip long enough for both hands, but typically weighed only 2.5 to 3.5 lbs. Audiences never fail to be shocked at not only how light a real longsword is, but also how fast and easily handled a longsword really is when used correctly! |
The replica longswords used by Knights of Veritas are made in the US by Albion Swords and are faithful to the historical originals in design, weight, and balance. Our swords are made of tempered carbon steel, designed to flex and return true just as the originals did. This is contrary to the abundance of "collector's items" that abound in the marketplace, characterized by elaborate hilts and heavy, impractical stainless steel blades. Such items are meant only for hanging on walls and have neither place nor counterpart in history. Knights of Veritas only uses swords that are real in both form and function, and are faithful to history. One of the most exciting moments in a Knights of Veritas presentation is the chance for the audience to safely handle one of our swords with supervision. Short of going to a museum, holding a Knights of Veritas sword is likely as close as you'll get to handling the real thing! |
